John J. Pershing was the only person to be promoted in his own lifetime to the highest rank ever held in the U.S. Army: General of the Armies. Pershing also holds the first U.S. officer service number: 0-1. He led the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. This vintage button is estimated to be from the early 1900s.
