Please don't fear my lack of star feedback! I'm back in the saddle again after a 2 year sabbatical as an Ebay seller of antiques, vintage treasure, and modern items since 2005. And yet once again, I unearthed another rare beauty in a box of junk..unwrapped, unprotected...and here it is....it survives! I have seen some examples of this ornament type and they are not worth even selling because they are so easily damaged. In the case of this one mixed up with unrelated stuff, I'm totally amazed !! This type of large mercury glass ornament from West Germany is so fragile, I have only discovered 3 in decades of treasure hunting. The reason, I believe, is the glass is so thin and therefore so easily broken, and the metal tinsel wiring is so easily twisted around or broken, or the 2 pikes and the cap are missing. The ones I have seen and sold always show vintage age related missing paint or slightly malaligned wiring, but they are all intact. And so is this one. Measures about 4" tall x about 3 3/4" wide with a circumference of 12". It's hard to tell by the photos, but it is quite a large ornament. See my oversized zoom photos for a better description. The silver metal cap, pike, and hang loop are in amazing contion and is marked "West Germany". There are 2 pikes...the one I just mentioned and the one underneath that is made with only a hang loop in order to loop the metal tinsel netting around...the bottom isn't intended for hanging..however, since the top matte gold satin sheen coating on the top of ornament is missing areas of color showing white, you could hand it on the tree upside down....because the bottom portion (see photos of top and bottom) is in super excellent condition for its age showing only a few minor missing color areas. The tinsel wire netting reminds me of very fine brass...but I'm not certain of that. It is the color of brass. Both top and bottom still have gold metallic foil tiny stars glued on..although I'm sure a few are missing. There is also a 3/16" wide gold star foil braiding encircling the ornament, and it is 100% intact. Black ornament stand is not included..for photo purposes only. Considering the age of this ornament and the country of origin and the fact it is mercury glass with wire netting and that it is still intact and beautiful, this, in my opinion, is a highly collectible ornament worth saving for future generations. NOTE: Fragile Christmas glass ornaments, even though I pro pack to prevent breakage, will be shipped by USPS Priority Mail air only.
