DETAILS OF ITEM This piece measures 6" tall. This is a five-pronged (a center pole is surrounded by the four prongs) brass bell called a Kongo bell and it is used in the spiritual training of Esoteric Buddhism in Japan and it is one of the ritual objects. Esoteric Buddhism began in ancient India originally and was brought to Japan in the 7th century through China by two famous priests named Kukai and Saicho. Esoteric Buddhism contained strong components of magic and ritual, and made frequent use of art to transmit religious ideas. Esoteric Buddhism has many Buddhas and Gods. At the beginning of their ritual, the practitioners used these bells to call the relevant Buddhas and Gods. When they were finished, they used the bells to send the Buddhas and Gods back. The bell used most frequently for these ceremonies was the five-pronged bell like this particular piece. The connection inside that suspends the ringer appears to be a replacement. Except for this, the overall condition of this piece is very good and its age is from the 1950's.
