This is a very nice carved ainu bear in another unique carving. Can you tell I like these different ones????A larger size, he stands 13 inches in height and is 14 inches across. His front feet pose him on a small hill. He carries the end of his fish pole in his mouth while he climbs the hill, the large salmon on his back. This is an older bear that is at least 50 years old. The base has the back and forth saw cuts, rather than the smoother more recent clean cuts. He does have some minor dings, but can easily be cleaned up. I always leave that to the buyer and sell my pieces as I find them. No chips or cracks. Ainu pieces are unique to Hokkaido, Japan and are carved by Ainu and thier descendants. To read more about the history of the Ainu, check out the Ainu Museum on the web. Thier story mirrors that of the American Indian experience.
