One of the most common basket forms from 1880 (or maybe a bit earlier) to about 1950. This one is c/1930-40. No reserve on this basket in perfect condition It is made on a foundation of brown ash splints (warp), the traditional material of MaIne and Eastern Canadian Indian basketmakers, most of it also has brown ash weavers (weft splints). T is tidal sweetgrass around the outer rim of the basket top and at the center of the lid t are a few rows woven with plain (not braided) tidal sweetgrass. Hong Kong cord (a commercial material only available from about 1920-just prior to WW II) is also used as the primary "weaver" in the lid and on the basket it is used as the weavers at the top and bottom of the sides. The nicely braided decorative handle is also made of Hong Kong cord. - Great size, 8" in diameter and 4.5" high. The foundation splints inside show this was made using a "roman' color" pattern. Several colors are used fanning out making a nice pattern. This was dyed very soft colors, except for the black ... so that it is totally faded on the exterior and nearly faded on the bottom.
