Rare Vintage WWII British Mark V Heliograph Signaling Mirror Morse Code Military This is rare World War II British Heliograph.Used by the military for more than 70 years, this form of communication was the biggest thing since smoke signals. This British Heliograph is marked " Helio 5" Mark V N.I.V.O.C. – W.I.G. LTD , No. 821556" is marked on the bottom of the brass mirror bases. The Heliograph is in very good condition. The 5" diameter mirror has no cracks. NO Tripod!Overall it stands 9” tall by 6 ½” wideI don’t know if this is true but a handwritten paper says the mirror was used during the Shades of the Zulu war in Africa by the British The heliograph was originally invented by Sir Henry C. Mance of Karachi, Bombay, who filed a US Patent in February of 1876. The heliograph operator moved the mirror to send Morse code messages to another operator. The heliograph was used by the military from the 1880's through both World Wars.
