I recently went to a invitation only estate sale in Santa Fe ... the family is selling off the lifetime collection of the deceased parents before putting the horse on the market. The couple had been in the southwest from the late 50s and had quite a collection on Navajo rugs, pots, baskets and other pieces including more then 100 katchina dolls. Over the next few weeks Iâe(tm)ll be selling some of this collection. Painting depicting the Shalako ceremony. The painting was done by (signed) Terry Leonard in 1983. Nice detail and quality. Size 16âex20âe, painted on canvas board. Shalako is a Zuni ceremony occurring during the first week of December. It is a reenactment of various important tribal myths. The winter celebration is held to welcome Shalako, messengers from the gods who will bring blessings of fertility, long life and prosperity to Zuni residents. During the two-day celebration, the rituals and ceremonies reenact the creation of the Zuni and their migration to their pueblo Halona Iâe(tm)tiwana (Middle Anthill of the world). Each year, members of the community are singled out to host Shalako.
