ITEM DESCRIPTION -- VIRGINIA METALCRAFTERS Williamsburg Brass DOORSTOP This is a magnificent heavy solid cast brass doorstop from Virginia Metalcrafters. This is their Hessian Soldier doorstop that is sometimes called the "striding man". It was originally designed by Max Rieg, a German silversmith who was hired by the Colonial Williamsburg company during the early days of their Williamsburg restoration. Rieg designed this Hessian soldier after an actual colonial design and it was used for cast iron andirons as well as brass doorstops. When the prestigious company, VIrginia Metalcrafters, took over the manufacture of all the items licensed by the Colonial Williamsburg restoration, they began to make the Hessian soldier.
