WALTHERS 89' AUTO CARRIER Railroads have long played an important role in the delivery of finished vehicles. In the 40's and 50's boxcars, with double doors to facilitate loading and unloading, were used. New applications for piggyback flats were developed in the 60's, including the first "open rack" conversion for hauling autos. This made volume shipping possible, so that by the end of that decade over 50% of all new automobiles traveled by rail. Although successful, the vehicles were exposed to the elements and easy targets for vandalism and theft. Metal panels were installed between the braces of the rack, a roof was added and doors were installed at each end. This particular Walthers auto rack was modeled for Grand Trunk & Western and carries the reporting #504109. It is fully built and upgraded with Kadee #5 couplers. This item is marked as used BUT HAS ABSOLUTELY NO RUN TIME!!! We have seen these list on ebay for $10 plus $8 for shipping or as much as $20 plus $10 shipping. That's why we'll start this off at the low low price of $16 and that includes the shipping cost. Well, if you've gotten this far, you may want to know more about JSGeare and Mike Militello. We run a model railroad business in central and northern Virginia and are dedicated to getting the best possible values into the hands of (mainly HO) rail modelers.
