The first picture is of the kit as a model built up to see on HO track, the 2nd picture is of the Prototype of the kit ON THE RAILHEAD, the rest are of the Jordan Spreader at work doing what it was built to do with some accompaniment by the DIFCO Side Dump. As with all utility rolling stock the Road name is not as important as the availability of the required cars themselves. So you may acquire the Canadian National and the CSX and use them in the same consist freely. Item: Walthers Kit. Sold out at the manufacturer. These very distinctive cars are the railroad equivalent of a dump truck. Designed to carry up to 100 tons, they are fitted with large pneumatic cylinders and side doors, and can dump to the left or right of the tracks. Unlike other MOW cars, they can also be used in revenue service to carry sand, gravel, cinders, coal and other loose bulk materials. These cars will be right at home on any maintenance project and are perfect for use with Walthers Work Train Sets. The kits are easy to build, and are designed so they can be positioned in a dump mode, with movable cylinders and side doors. They'll look great hauling ash from the Cornerstone Series (R) Northern Light & Power Powerhouse (933-3021) or carrying rock or dirt away from the New River Mining Co. (933-3017). One of the most useful pieces of equipment in railroad maintenance, the Jordan Spreader can be found along the road in several different situations including cleaning up after rock slides and spreading ballast, but cutting drainage ditches is where it is found most often. It is accompanied by several of these DIFCO Side Dump Cars to supply the gravel to spread and to haul away the results of the Jordan Spreader work. It is often found followed by a crane that lifts the excess dirt and debris into waiting DIFCO Side Dump cars. This scene can easily be modeled using a 25 Ton Crane (932-5500), followed by several Difco Dump Cars such as this one. This car is painted in the CANADIAN NATIONAL MAROON MOW colors. The maintenance and repair of a railroad's right-of-way calls for a wide range of specialized cars and equipment. One of the more unique examples is the side dump car. Although several styles have appeared over the years, one of the most common is the DIFCO car, which is the prototype for this model. The railroad equivalent of a dump truck, these sturdy cars carry rock, stone, ballast and other materials, which need to be dumped to the side, well away from the rails. The low height body makes the car easy to load, helps stabilize the car while dumping or in transit. Unlike other MOW cars, they can also be used in revenue service to carry sand, gravel, cinders, coal and other loose, bulk material. Tor this rugged service, the cars feature all-welded steel construction, and are built in various sizes up to 500 cubic yards and 100 tons capacity. In operation, the cars can be used singly, or coupled together. Each has a self-contained dumping system, consisting of four telescoping air cylinders (two per side) mounted beneath the dump bed, where they are protected from dirt and damage. The bed jpivots so the load can be dumped to either side. A single valve operates the mechanism. However, when several cars are used together, the dumping can be controlled from any car, or the locomotive if desired. Once activated, the bed rises to a 50 degree angle and the active side door opens automatically. An entire load can be dumped in 6-10 seconds with considerable accuracy. A one-piece floor and no interior bracing insures clean unloading. The DIFCO is not limited to railroad maintenance service.
