Peleus, a mortal, is married by Zeus to his sea-goddess daughter, Thetis. Zeus fears that if Thetis were to marry a god, their son would be more powerful than himself. Peleus and Thetis' son Achilles, being half human, would be no rival to Zeus. This 115 year old vase measures 5" tall and is marked 'Wedgwood England' which generally dates the piece to between the McKinley Tariff Act of 1891 and Wedgwood abandoning the 'England' Only mark in 1905 for most general production pieces. The use of the 'England' Only mark continued for some production after 1905. (1891-1905)During the mid to late 1800's the figures were often 'draped' wherein the male figures, originally nude, were modestly covered to spare Victorian sensibilities. In some cases Cupid's legs are crossed for the same purpose. That does not occur on this example. Please take a very good look at this piece and make an offer if you're interested. 2935KA315-50-400-497
