This is a super nice... Westmoreland Glass Company marked... Hen on a Nest. It sets about 4 1⁄4 inches tall... 5 1⁄2 inches long.... 4 1⁄4 inches wide... and appears to be in perfect condition. This Hen is the âeoesplit tailâe type... which is much more desirable than the âeoeflat tailâe style. The Hen carries the Westmoreland mark on the inside bottom... and the Nest is marked on the underside bottom and also in the inside bottom. We find both the early and the latter Westmoreland marks on the Nest... but only the later mark on the Hen. Our Hen is an electrifying shade of Yellow Vaseline Glass. But what makes this delightful âeoegalâe even more exciting... is her Snowy White Milk Glass Head. Producing glassware with multiple colors has always been a time consuming... hands on operation. In this case it required the glass workers to retrieve the White Milk Glass from one furnace... and place a small amount into the up-turned mold... while a second worker gatd the Vaseline Glass from a second furnace... which he then in turn placed just the right amount into the mold to complete the operation. The Base for our Hen is in the âeoeBasket Weaveâe pattern... and is again that elusive Vaseline Glass. I should also mention that this Vaseline Glass is highly fluorescent under the Black Light... giving off a brilliant yellow green glow. Quality Vaseline glass has becoming quite scarce in the marketplace. This is due primarily to tighter controls government has placed on the use of that key ingredient... uranium... that is needed to make this color of glass. Uranium is also employed in the production of armor piercing shells used by the military... and I also feel sure that the tighter controls on uranium was put in place to keep it out of the hands of would-be terrorists... hoping to build a âeoedirty bombâe. Uranium not only gives Vaseline glass its intriguing yellow green color but it is also what makes the glass give off its brilliant fluorescent glow under black light. The âeoeHen on a Nestâe was first introduced by the Westmoreland Glass Company in 1904... and the owner... Charles H. West... once remarked that the prosperity of his company was due in great part to the popularity of their line of âeoeAnimal Novelettesâe of which the Hen on a Nest was the leading figure. These little âeoecovered dishesâe were filled with mustard... and sold... believe it or not... by the âeoerailroad car loadâe. Awhile back we bought a nice collection/accumulation of several hundred Hens... Roosters... Cats... Horses... Ducks... Bunnies... a couple of Lions... and I believe a Cow or two... on Nests... through our antique shop... in an assortment of colors... and color combinations... like Iâe(tm)ve never seen before. They are from numerous makers... and in assorted sizes. Weâe(tm)ve sold a bunch... but still have quite a few to offer.
