is an unusual, Victorian, quadruple plate, 3 piece butter dish made by the Wilcox Silverplate Co., of Meriden, Conn during the 1880's. It has a hinged, dome lid that opens to an upright position. A screw and pin holds the lid to the base and the lid is removable for cleaning. It retains its original, silver rimmed, beveled glass insert and an incredible interior scene of a cherub chasing a butterfly. The background of the scene is filled with flowers, foliage and strawberries. Interior scenes such as this are very rare within butter dishes and makes this example very special. The overall condition is very good. The silverplate is intact and polishes to a bright shine. The beveled glass liner has only fine scratches and no chips. T are the inevitable pits around the perimeter of the scene, these are not visible when the glass liner is in place. T is also one, tiny hole in the perimeter ( at one o'clock), caused by the lid resting in that spot when it is upright, t is a corresponding flat spot on the exterior (at eleven o'clock) also caused by the lid. These are truly minor matters when compared to the whole beauty of this butter dish. It is 7 1/4' wide across the handles and stands 7" tall with the lid closed.Bid with confidence, you will not be disappointed. Questions are encouraged.
