Most well known for his comic strips Willie Doodle and Pottsy , the great Jay Irving gained his initial renown with his work done for Collier's magazine, depicting his "Collier's Cops". But before his work in Collier's, Irving did bullpen work for the King Features Syndicate, sometimes filling in on Billy DeBeck's Bughouse Fables . This particular Bughouse Fables , dated March 24, 1934, pictures a newly escaped convict, wondering if he should go back and get his goulashes, as it starts to rain. There's a reason the strip was titled the way it was! this 8¾"x8¾" panel is in Fine condition, with only a very, very light stain on the lower left corner. Irving used a lovely ink wash on the piece, which causes the stain to nearly blend in entirely. Still and all, beautiful drawing and a wonderful cartoon.
