Very decorative vintage cobalt blue and white Western Stoneware bowl designed by Eva Zeisel for their Monmouth brand, in good condition. Molded stoneware (earthenware) body, decorated with a hand-stenciled cobalt blue pattern called 'Colonial' under a semi-gloss salt glaze finish. Footrim unglazed. Marks: Stamped, under the glaze with a blue ink Eva Zeisel printed signature and Fine Stoneware from Monmouth . It looks like the central letters of the word "Stoneware" didn't take and were inked in (also under the glaze) by hand. Nice attention to detail. Date: Mid 1950s when Eva Zeisel designed a number of patterns for Western Stoneware under the Monmouth brand. Condition: Good. T is some roughness on the rim and a patch of pale ochre discoloration (looks like a firing flaw on the surface of the top-glaze and not underglaze staining) on the bottom of the interior and some ring-like crazing, none of which detracts but is mentioned for total accuracy. Absolutely no cracks, chips, gouges, hairlines or repairs. This bowl has a wonderfully peaceful, timeless quality yet makes an immediate statement wver it is placed on display. A lovely example from one of the greats of twentieth century ceramic art. Size: Diameter of bowl 5.5 inches (14.1 cms). Height 3 inches (7.7 cms).
