This is one of a kind domino set sculptured by the Seri’s, an Indigenous reservation in northern Mexico, from the wood of an "Ironwood" tree (Palo Fierro in Spanish). It has a beautiful grain and as it name implies it is very strong, heavy and dense.Ironwood is the largest and longest-lived Sonoran desert plant. Reaching 45 ft. in height and persisting as long as 1,500 years. To be suitable for carving, the wood must be exposed to the extremes of the climatic conditions that exist only in the desert. Years of exposure in the hot, dry environment cause the natural resins to collect, condense and cure, thus transforming the wood into a very dense and heavy IRONWOOD. The government has restricted the harvesting of living Ironwood trees, causing the artisans to search extensively for naturally fallen trees. The Seri’s are the only ones that have the right to work this beautiful wood. Once the wood has been gathered, each piece is hand crafted using very simple tools. It requires long hours of carving, hand sanding and polishing, plus an artistic eye to effectively capture the beautiful burl and distinctive grain-inherent in Ironwood. The result of this hand work is that no two pieces are identical. There is a limited supply of true Ironwood and a diminishing number of carvers.
