This is a very old Japanese Geisha Pillow. I believe it is post war, but it is hard to date. It is made of woven reed on a wood frame. The bag it was found in is Ryukyu Bashofu. Bashofu is a woven cloth made from Banana fibers. It is very soft and silky to the touch. The pattern is typical of Bashofu patterns. which are normally geometric in design. The bag is not as old, but in wonderful condition. The pillow does have some damage in the open work, but the rest of the weaving is in good condition. It is priced accordingly. It stands 7 inches tall and 9 inches wide. Why did the women use this kind of pillow? Thier formal hairstyles were made by combing thru very thin wax, then molding the hair in place,so if they laid flat it would ruin the shape. (I'm glad they invented hairspray and wigs!)
