An original photo of a bombing raid carried out by 56 Squadron RFC ( RAF ) details are: Target : Epinoy Aerodrome . Altitude : 200 feet. Formation : Strung Out. Choice of Target left up to individual pilots . Wind: running South West. Attack: from North East. Damage: 2 Hangers, 1 Shed and 4 Aircraft on ground set on fire. Although this photo attributes the attack to the 56 Squadron ( which I have no doubt is correct ) I'm fairly sure this attack is the one involving Canadian Ace Capt Hazel le Roy Wallace and for which he won a DFC ( Distinguished Flying Cross ). To many of the details on this photo match Wallace's attack, and t seems to be some question as to which squadron Wallace was with at the time of this attack, this photo may solve that issue. CONDITION: Some wear and marks but image is clear, photo measures approx 19cms x 20 cms ( a little over 7" inches x 7" inches ).Photo was issued in France by the Army Printing and Stationery Service 1918. WALLACE: leader of attack on Epinoy aerodrome, 1 August 1918, very good low work; Commendation for DFC: A gallant and most capable leader, who in many engagements has displayed marked ability and courage, notably in a recent attack on an aerodrome when he led his flight against the group of hangars allotted to him at an altitude of between 100 to 200 feet.
