A Mystery Image from the First World War . I don't really need to know who the family is because the image is just wonderful and a stand-out photograph for it's time. So what can we work out? It's Winter. A father wearing an ordinary soldier's uniform. He appears to be a 'one-stripe' corporal. The hat badge is probably that of the Hertfordshire Regiment (a 'Hart' or Deer) which ties in neatly with the location of the postcard's publisher (L L Christmas of St Albans). Men who enlisted in St Albans tended to serve in 'B' Company of the 1st Battalion, but that might be a guess too far. The father's face looks middle-aged before his time and those eyes seem rather haunted. Back on leave from the Front? Survived the War? The son is wearing a complete mini-uniform - greatcoat, cap, puttees, and carrying a toy rifle. And a bit of attitude. The photographer is Lea Latimer Christmas (1871-1941) who worked out of the 23 Catherine Street premises in St Albans between c1915 and c1925, which gives us the approximate date range. A sepia 'real photograph' postcard of "Soldier Father, Soldier Son, Daughter, Dog and Goat" The card is unposted. The postcard was taken and published by L L Christmas of St Albans probably between 1915 and 1925.The condition of this century-old card is "Good". The image is clean and unmarked; irregular white borders; edges read more
