Lazy Dog Bombs , also referred to as "Red Dot Bombs" or "Yellow Dog Bombs" are small, gravity-powered non-guided missiles only 1-3/4" long with a 1/2" diameter. They are about the size of a .50 caliber bullet, not including the fins.These missiles were scattered by the thousands over enemy targets with the use of Mark 44 cluster adapters, which were large empty bomb shells that would split open at a pre-defined altitude, spilling the individual lazy dog bombs over the battlefield. Besides being distributed with Mark 44 cluster adapters, they were sometimes simply dumped out of the doors of airplanes and helicopters at altitude by the handful or by the bucket, with devastating results to the targets below. They are pure, solid metal with no cavities or voids inside. That is not to say that they were less destructive than explosive bombs! These potent little missiles were capable of reaching or exceeding their 500 MPH terminal velocity through gravity alone, and would easily penetrate an enemy helmet, shelters and buildings, vehicles, parked aircraft, and the thickest jungle cover.Lazy dog bombs and the supporting systems were developed by the United States military during WWII and were used continuously through WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.Lazy dog bombs were eventually phased out from deployment because they were cited by the United Nations and other international organizations as an " indiscriminate weapon", and despite their effectiveness against enemy troops, they were eventually banned for political and humanitarian reasons.Due to the fact that lazy dog bombs were an experimental weapon and were not as widely used as other weapons systems, lazy dog bombs are highly prized by military collectors, especially in this exceptional and unused condition. Many lazy dog bombs that you find on eBay and collector shows are rusty or corroded, damaged, or otherwise in poor condition. All the lazy dog bombs we sell are in mint unissued condition, guaranteed to be free of any rust or damage. Our lazy dog bombs still have the factory-applied coating of protective cosmoline, which is a reddish-brown hard wax. If desired, you can remove the original cosmoline with a gentle wipe of acetone or nail polish remover to reveal the fresh bright steel finish, but collectors will want to leave the cosmoline intact.
