2 x Messrs Hoare, London, 25.10.1880 + 09.09.1918 Imprint:- None . Watermark:- MESSIEURS HOARE FLEET STREET with the Leather Bottle icon between the two. All housed within a single line scroll framework. Immaculately centered on 1880 item, maintained on 1918 item, but cheque cut from a larger watermarked sheet therefore not centered and in reduced size as the cheque itself is. Two i nteresting & contrasting cheques. T he 1880 item printed on fine high quality paper - 250 x 95 mm, visually almost translucent, but full bodied & robust in its firmness . The highly decorative security panel on t he reverse features no less than 39 leather bottles , the house symbol of Hoares. A recent archive visit to Hoares by the British Banking History Society ( BBHS ) concluded with a gift of a framed Hoare cheque dated 1876 without the reverse decorative security panel. The 1880 item on offer corresponds with an 1881 example also with the panel. On an 1898 example, sold earlier on ebay, the panel was omitted and the printed design on the front modified. The panel appears to be a scarce/rare short lived design feature only available on surviving cheques, used or unused. ebay supersize scans used for your detailed inspection and enjoyment.
