XOLOITZCUINTLI Xoloitzcuintli is a dog that has been in existence for centuries in Mexico. It is documented that it has existed since the during the time of the Aztec civilization. Xoloitzcuintli figures made of red-ware and clay have been found in archeological sites in Mexico, particularly in the state of Colima, Mexico. Xoloitzcuintli played an important role in society during ancient times. Xoloitzcuintli figures likes the ones pictured here have been found in excavated grave sites. The symbolism behind these ritual is that xoloitzcuintli were viewed as the spiritual guardians and guides of the deceased. Xoloitzcuintli symbolized eternal life. A clay figure of a xoloitzcuintli was buried with the deceased person. The xoloitzcuintli figures depicted a dog with a big belly. The big belly symbolized a well fed dog to survive through the nine underworlds while accompanying the soul of the deceased. The clay figures have been found in different sizes.
