African Tribal Art Yoruba Offering Figure Nigeria Material: wood, pigment, sacrificial patina Condition: good Size: approx 10" high (26cm) Yoruba Offering Figure Nigeria This figure is sacred to Shango, the thunder god, as indicated by the headdress, which is that of a Shango priestess.Such figures were used to hold the palm-nuts used by diviners to foretell the future. They were placed in the bowl, w they gatd spiritual power in between divinations.The figure is coated with a crusted sacrifical patina (egg, blood etc) apart from the headdress, which is kept scrupulously clean.A beautiful Yoruba figure.
