It is engraved Young & Sons, Philadelphia and bearing the serial number 5294. I'm not a good or patient antiques researcher, but I believe this was produced during sometime during the years between 1890 to 1914. Length is approx. 20" overall when fully extended (without the slip-on sunscreen installed), and 18" when fully retracted. There are no signs of restoration, refinishing, rough repairs, or rough handling. This is a very lovely, original example of this maker's instruments as well as this vintage of wye level. This instrument would have been used for any number of tasks in land survey, industrial machinery set-up, and possibly RR railroad engineering or RR construction. This is an unrestored instrument with the lovely original patina. A fine addition to any Philadelphia, Pennsylvania oriented collection of manufacturing, technology, optical, or scientific instruments or tools from Philadelphia PA. Very nice antique transit level. CONDITION: Antique, unrestored, good overall for being unrestored and 100+ years old, with a lovely ruddy-toned patina. On outward appearance, the optics appear only fair, but we were able to see intact crosshairs, and focus across our yard. The bubble leveling vial is intact with a clear bubble. The focus mechanism for the objective end seems to be a rack and pinion type. The portion of travel of this mechanism when close to the retracted (shortened) position is not responsive. It can however be gently pulled out to a point where it does respond to the focus knob. This seems to be a problem common to many of these early telescopes. The diopter (eyepiece focus) works. There is an old dent in the rim of the eyepiece metalwork. The mechanism moves but will need cleaning, and or lube. There have been no attempts at any repairs . The storage case appears to be of mahogany, it is also unrestored, and only in fair condition. Sorry, we have no key for the lock.
