White Marble Mountain Lion with Turquoise Eyes, by Francis Leekya 5 3/4" long If you are struck by this fetish carved by Francis Leekya (d. 2003), you probably would like a little background on this piece and the artist. He was the son of Leekya Deyuse who most art historians would describe as the most important/influential 20th century Zuni Artist. While his fathers influence is evident, Francis developed his own style that "pushed the boundaries" of Zuni fetish carving. Each Carving has a presence and an identifiable personality, as well as a great respect for the stone itself. These pieces have a dynamic energy yet simultaneously have a very calm/gentle quality that bespeaks the care/love with which they were carved.
