19 th Century Large Conch Shell Cameo Long Gold Chain This is for the sale of a cameo the like of which I never imagined I would hold. The quality and age of this piece is unmistakable and its beauty is indisputable. Notably, this listing includes the cameo's original 20" 9K gold necklace. This necklace should be in a New England estate auction for $1,000 or more. Instead, I bought it in California's Gold Country and am willing to sell for $150, but no less. Hence, my starting price is $150 in this no games and no reserve auction. Comparison shop to see that the starting price is below market for the chain alone! The following are details about the cameo: Ü The cameo is 2 ¼" tall and 1 ¾" wide. The overall shape is oval and unevenly concave - the shape seen in most genuine conch shell cameos. Ü The cameo depicts Flora who, in Roman mythology, was a goddess of flowers and the season of spring. She was a minor figure in Roman times, but became a favorite subject of cameo artists in the 1850s with the popularity of revival jewelry (featuring ancient Greek and Roman themes).. [1] Ü This figure is wearing light Grecian garb, low on her breast. The flowers are her hair, not just decorations in it. Her ample neck and profile features are ancient Roman.
