Up for auction is very Fine & Rare drypoint etching on paper of renown early Hollywood radio & moive star Fanny Brice. This is an Amazing and Rare etching of a rear view of Fanny Brice nude by the highly regarded Hollywood artist Dayton Brown. We bought this etching directly from the estate of the son of Dayton Brown in the prestigious Sunset Cliffs / Point Loma area of San Diego,CA. The etching is pencil signed by the artist "Dayton Brown, lower right. Untitled. Dayton Brown is very well listed and a master printmaker. In the 1920's and into the 30's he was considered the premier Hollywood artist to the stars. Here is a bio from AskART courtesy of Edan Milton Hughes: Born in Chicago IL on June 7, 1895. Brown studied at the AIC, University of Illinois, Art Center School of Los Angeles, and San Diego State College. He moved to southern California in the 1920s and settled in South Pasadena where he specialized in portraits of Hollywood stars and illustrations for the movie industry. From 1936 he maintained a portrait studio in Coronado. During WWII he served as head of Concealment Research for the U.S. Navy. After his discharge, he returned to San Diego and established a studio in La Jolla. Brown died there on Aug. 22, 1971. Member: Calif. Society of Etchers; Calif. PM; Calif. Art Club; Chicago Society of Etchers. Exh: Beverly Hills Hotel, 1932; Assistance League (LA), 1934; San Diego Art Guild, 1939 (1st prize, portrait bust); Royal Academy, London, 1966; San Diego FA Gallery, 1967 (solo). Source: Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940" The actual impression measures measures 6 3/8" tall by 3" wide. The sheet measures 9 3/4" x 5 3/4". Original and period works of art of Fanny Brice NUDE are VERY rare. You will likely not find any for sale anywhere. This is one of the most incredibly delicate and sensuous images I've ever seen of her and a personal choice of the artist. I bought ALL of the Dayton Brown prints of Fanny nude in the estate, and there were only a few. Please see the other I have listed now.
