This may be an eBay first as I can find no other past sale of a "Big Al's Tool"!Either way what the hech is a "Big Al's?" For the working timber framer working in a modern shop with milled timbers it's a framing square on steroids for speeding up the layout process. For the weekend framer it's a tool that makes square-rule layout much simpler as long as one is working with well cut timbers.Without getting into a short essay on how square-rule timber frame layout is done I offer instead this link for the curious. A bit down the page t's a explanation of square rule layout and shows how to use "Big Al's" tool for layout. Square rule layout 's a bit more on the tool at the Timber Framer's Guild site: TG Guild Info on Big Al's Typical of square rule timber framing joints are placed at 1.5" in from the timber edge and the tenon/mortise is 1.5" wide for hardwoods and 2" in by 2" wide for softwoods such as eastern white pine. The gauge's slots allow marking lines at 2, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 7.5, 8.5 and 9.5 inches on one side and 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 inches on the other side. As shown in the picture below to layout a line 3" in from the timber/board edge is as simple as laying the gauge against the edge and scribing a line at the 3" slot edge. Not sure if Big read more
