CLASSIC 1965 Original Photo "ONE RIDE w/ YANKEE PAPA 13" by Larry Burrows Starting Bid 99 cents !!! .... Absolutely NO RESERVE !!! DESCRIPTION "ONE RIDE with YANKEE PAPA 13" by Larry Burrows Here is one of the most famous war photographs ever captured courtesy of Larry Burrows of LIFE Magazine. It appeared on the April 16, 1965 cover of LIFE and is regarded as the single GREATEST War photograph ever captured in the history of the prestigious picture magazine. It is titled "One Ride With Yankee Papa 13" and was captured early in the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War. It is THE image that is credited with introducing America's homefront audience to the horrors of war on the other side of the globe. The date was March 31, 1965. The U.S. Marines’ Helicopter Squadron 163 knew their mission – to airlift nine Vietnamese infantry to a post some 20 miles away. The crew was being led by Lance Cpl James C. Farley, who was only 21, and had been shopping around the nearby town of Da Nong earlier that day. Once airborne and with nine Vietnamese infantry on board, they knew it was a trap. ‘The Vietcong dug in along the tree line, were just waiting for us to come into the landing zone,’ Burrows wrote in his report. ‘We were all like sitting ducks and their raking crossfire was murderous.’ He described the chaos of trying to rescue a wounded pilot who was bleeding from the neck from the nearby Yankee Papa 13. The helicopter’s blades were still whirring and enemy fire rang around him. With gunshots from the enemy barraging the copter, they had no choice but to leave the wounded pilot and flee for their lives. The YP13, had to wait until they were out of reach from enemy fire to tend to the wounded. Lt James Magel, the pilot from YP3, had a grisly wound under his right armpit, Barrow reported. But blood began coming out of his nose and mouth, and he was gone. ‘Magel was dead. Nobody said a word,’ Barrow wrote. ‘We were all left with our own drained thoughts.’ Offered is a RARE, Vintage 1966 ORIGINAL Photo of that shot that was submitted to the NPPA photo contest. It is from the collection of the Minneapolis Tribune and is a bonafide vintage specimen made off Burrow's negative at the time. The photo measuring 8" x 10" is razor sharp in clarity and was one that was used in newsprint publication at the time bearing a newspaper clipping and a MAY 2 1966 stamp date on the reverse. It has been authenticated by PSA/DNA as a TYPE I , period 1st generation exemplar and has been encapsulated in PSA’s photograph holder. In the words of LIFE, .... over the decades, of course, LIFE published dozens of photo essays by some of the 20th century’s greatest photographers. Very few of those essays, however, managed to combine raw intensity and technical brilliance to such powerful effect as “One Ride With Yankee Papa 13″ — widely regarded as the single greatest photographic achievement to emerge from the war in Vietnam. A breathtaking photo that captures the human emotion and an image that was scorched into the consciousness of the public, inspiring much of the anti-war sentiment that convulsed American society in the 1960's.
