HENSOLDT ARTILLERIE 8x24 German Military Binoculars Artillery Field glasses Estate found - see my other listings. The logic behind identification, dating and describing these items is based on a quick online search and there position together. The conclusion is that these are of pre-WWII styling German Military binoculars. Possibly saw service in WWI German where Hensoldt eventually merged with Zeiss. They seem to be original though worn Japan Black (lacquer finish) on brass hosing and otherwise devoid of country of origin markings indicating it was either pre-1894 made for national (military) use circa 1900-1920. The left housing is marked "HENSOLDT" and right housing marked "ARTILLERIE 8 x 24" Condition: Used good, Estate item ...The eyepiece lenses are a little dirty and have fingerprints yet the view is surprisingly sharp and bright image. There is noticeable wear on the high spots of body and lens rings. The Hinge for width / eye spacing is mechanically tight though smooth loose. The right eye cups has a crack though remains functional, the right eye adjustment is very tight, and focus knob is stiff though they seem to focus OK and the set is surprisingly sharp. There is one small scratch on one front lens and there could be a few faint cleaning marks under the dirt. Otherwise no nicks or scratches into the glass and no dulling (no excessive signs of cleaning) to the coatings of the eyepieces and objectives. Only one dot of internal fungus noted on the prism and can only be seen looking backwards through the glasses and it does not even register as a smudge when viewing through them. They're not perfect but certainly in nice shape for something that is 80 years to 120 years of service. Some wear, patina and age spots in keeping with age and use but these are still impressive optics and quite fieldable today. *** My mom said that her Father's was very proud of his pair Carl Zeiss Binoculars and had had them for as long as she can remember. And that as a child she had always been told not to play with them because they were very valuable. My mom remembers being 5yrs old during WWII with rationing going on. Then, just on the other side of the Great Depression people knew of the wanting for things in a way that is just not understood today. Anyway Despite the passing of time it seems the discovery of these binoculars triggered some memories from a time when some things were more precious than children. Perhaps owing to these memories she still does not feel comfortable using them herself, and also can't let the grand kids just playing with them either. After some thought she asked me to list them on eBay so they could find a home where they will be enjoyed. *** Have the best of luck and enjoy yourself in both the field and with your bidding. Early war military or between the wars commercial it is anyone's guess, as this piece is only partially marked by a German maker.
