Published nearly 110 years ago, this edition is now long out of print and hard to find.From the Preface: "THE encouragement given by many prominent and influential citizens induced the author and publishers to undertake the task of preparing this work in two comprehensive volumes. AFter diligent, faithful and well-directed effort, the work has been completed. The facts embodied in this history have been obtained from all the available sources of information and a faithful attempt has been made to produce an authentic work, one that is worthy of the County of York, so full of historic associations. In no part of Pennsylvania, except Philadelphia, did so many events of the greatest importance occur during the Revoltuion as in the town of York, where Congress assembled for mine months of the darkest period of the war. The story of the early settlements west of the Susquehanna and the controversy between the Provinces of Maryland and Pennsylvania during the Colonial period, is given in exhaustive detail. The settlement of the Quakers, the Germans and the Scotch-Irish who first took up the valuable lands of York County has been carefully treated. The valor and patriotism shown by the people of York County in the different wars in which our county has been involved shine with lustrous effect on the pages of history. The growth and development of the business, manufacturing and farming interests fo the County of York commanded the closest attention on the part of the author and publishers. The first volume also contains a speical history of he City of York, every borough and township in the County, and chapters devoted to the Press, the Bench and Bar, Medical PRofession, religious and educational interests. In the preparation of the first volume words of special commendation are due Miss Lena T. root, who was the efficient secretary to the author during the whole time of its preparation. Mr. James W. Shettel was a valuable assistant in consulting the records relating to York County in the Revolution and Continental Congress at York, two fo the important subjects fo this volume. Miss Vera E. Wolf rendered valuable aid in the preparation of several chapters nad in putting the book through the press. A few articles were prepared by able contributors whose names appear in the text..."According to Wikipedia: "York County is a county in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of the 2010 census, the population was 434,972.[1] Its county seat is York.[2] The county was created on August 19, 1749, from part of Lancaster County and named either for the Duke of York, an early patron of the Penn family, or for the city and shire of York in England. York County comprises the York-Hanover, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Harrisburg-York-Lebanon, PA Combined Statistical Area. It is in the Susquehanna Valley, a large fertile agricultural region in South Central Pennsylvania. Based on the Articles of Confederation having been adopted in York by the Second Continental Congress on November 15, 1777, the local government and business community began referring to York in the 1960s as the first capital of the United States of America.
