1705 De Fer Map - Bellegarde Nicolas De Fer was the official geographer to the French king as well as being a successful publisher "dans l'Isle du Palais sur le Quay de l'Orloge a la Sphere royale' in Paris. Among his many atlases was his 'Introduction de la Fortification..' first issued in 1693 and showing the defensive sites of major European cities. This nicely detailed copperplate engraved map of Bellegarde in Roussillon in south east France near the Spanish border, comes from a 1705 issue of that atlas. The fort is shown in a near impregnable position on a high rock looking over surrounding countryside. The map measures 7" by 9", has wash hand colouring, and is in very good condition with adequate blank margins. The map is guaranteed to be over 300 years old.
