1705 De Fer Map - St. Omer Ville Forte des Pays Bas Nicolas De Fer was the official geographer to the French king as well as being a successful publisher "dans l'Isle du Palais sur le Quay de l'Orloge a la Sphere royale' in Paris. Among his many atlases was his 'Introduction de la Fortification..' first issued in 1693 and showing the defensive sites of major European cities. This nicely detailed copperplate engraved map of St. Omer in the northern French region of Artois, comes from a 1705 issue of that atlas. The map shows that although it is heavily fortified both inside and outside a moat, the main defence is an intricate series of canals or waterways. The map measures 7" by 9.5", has outline hand colouring, and is in very good condition. The map is guaranteed to be over 300 years old. Shipping United States - Regular airmail $4.50US.
