A rare, original issue of "The Caledonian Mercury" newspaper published in Edinburgh and dated Tuesday, September 2, 1740. The paper was published three times a week from 1720 for almost 150 years to 1867 (see below) At this time Britain was fighting Spain in the "War of Jenkins' Ear" (see below) and the front page reports that General James Oglethorpe has lost 130 men while attempting to take the castle at St. Augustine, Florida (see scan and below); concern that Lord Cathcart and George Anson failed to leave the Channel when Admiral Norris found good winds (see scan); that bodies have been seen floating off the Devon coast believed to be part of Admiral Norris's crew stricken with small-pox (see scan and below); and news that the King of Sardinia is repairing the fortifications of his recent acquisition, Tortona in Italy (see scan) A very early issue with important historical news throughout - t he complete paper has been scanned - see for detail Note: The text of this period is easier to read (particularly if you are Spanish) if you recognize that the letter "f" is used in place of "s" except in the case of capitals - so for example the "last sailing" is written "laft failing" ! Two pages - four sides. Good condition . Red tax stamp (see below). Page size 9 x 11 inches (very frame-able) War of Jenkins' Ear From Wikipedia, read more
