Both volumes boast their original exteriors and a perfectly readable text block! Includes the frontispiece portrait of George Washington!Original cloth backed exteriors show general wear from age but present nicely overall! Most noticeably both volumes show the former owner ’ s signature as well as stamp to the front boards. Both volumes also show heavy wear to the spine extremes, heavy wear to the joints, moderate rubbing, light soiling and light staining to the boards and spine, bumping to the corners, and some soiling to the edges. Otherwise an attractive set. Deckle edges present nicely. Original teal spine labels show some wear from age but display beautifully from the shelf; title lettering reads easily. A great antique look about these tomes!Internally, these volumes are sturdy overall. Both boards on Volume I remain attached, despite the heavy cracking to the joints; the rear board is precariously attached and the hinge shows heavy cracking, but overall it should remain attached if handled with care. The front hinge shows moderate cracking, but the board feels secure. The front board on Volume II is unfortunately detached, and the rear board is precariously attached by a few strands of cloth. Former owner ’ s signature also to the front endpaper of each volume; otherwise free from bookplates and library markings These volume both will require a little work to truly shine, but otherwise they ’ re in good shape. All page groupings are attached to the binding (the front free fly page in Volume II is slightly loose).The text block itself is in each volume is in GOOD condition throughout! Pages show moderate toning from age (a few pages show heavy toning, with an example pictured above) as well as moderate scattered foxing throughout, and perhaps some light soiling as well. There ’ s also some staining visible to the bottom corners, most visible in the first few pages of Volume I and then scattered throughout Volume II. Otherwise perfectly readable and free from rips, tears, writing and markings.Volume I includes the frontispiece illustration of George Washington.A FINE first edition set overall! An important early work of American history!
