Up for auction today is a cool early 1847 book "A Residence of Twenty-One Years in the Sandwich Islands; or the Civil, Religious, and Political History of Those Islands..." by Hiram Bingham, A. M. From the research I have done, the Sandwich Islands were an early name given to the Hawaiian Islands after James Cook visited t in the 1770s. This 616 page, hard cover book, is FULL of great information on Hawaii going back to "Origin of the Hawaiian Race", through Cook's exploration, and through to the 1840s, all done through the eye of the Christian missionaries t The book measures approx. 9 3/8" x 6 1/4", and approx. 2" thick. T are a handful of pictures/drawings, but mostly it is text. The cover of the book shows its age - the spine feels a little loose, and both ends have tears and wear, and the front cover has a portion of its covering missing. The interior pages, though, seem completely intact, but do show some foxing or age spots and discoloration. Still, its very readable, and would be a great read for that history buff! It even has a foldout black and white map inside the back cover that is still intact. What a great vintage book on Hawaii! Check out my pictures and email any questions. Thanks for looking!
