$5 1866 South Carolina This note used to be one of the rarest of SC Notes! 1866 State of South Carolina $5 Obsolete Bank Note Obsolete Currency Cut Cancelled You are bidding on a $5.00 bank note of the State of South Carolina dated January, 1866. This note was cut from sheets sold by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History and are guaranteed authentic. These bills were issued by the state to finance the reconstruction effort after the Civil War. The bill is signed by the comptroller and is cut cancelled. Judge the grade of the note yourself. Prior to the recent sale by the SC Department of Archives and History these bills were among the rarest. In his book, Sheheen listed each single bill with a rarity of 7 In his book, Schull listed each single bill with a rarity of 11 These bills are by no means common now. Based on the Schull rarity chart, after the recent sale, each single bill would have a rarity of 5. Still extremely uncommon!
