This is a charming little diary from 1868 that originally belonged to a 20 year old girl named Marietta. Although I couldn’t find her last name anyw, she does mention a James, Aunt Phoebe Bennett, Mother Bell and Uncle John Shafter. She also celebrates her birthday on September 17 th . During the first part of the diary Marietta was living in Athens Vermont http://www./~vermont/WindhamAthens.html and then in April the family sells their place and they move to Bellows Falls. / When they first arrive in Bellows Falls she’s homesick and calls it a “Lonesome and dirty place.” Then in June her father “sells out” again and she becomes worried about w they will live. However they stay in Bellows Falls. The diary is about ¾ full of handwritten entries, meaning t are about 282 days that Marietta has written on. I’ve taken several excerpts and quoted them ………1868“January 1 st , Now I am about to commence a new diary and a New Year. I hope it may not be all wasted time. I hope to be useful to others and my God as well as myself. James came from Cavendish today. Was to super. Gave him a New Years present of a watch case.” “January 7 th , In the evening went down to B. Wyman’s to a prayer meeting. I never went to a better meeting. James spoke in the meeting for the first time. It seems as though I could not be thankful enough to think God has called after him and I hope and pray he will call after my brother .” “February 2 nd , Went to the funeral of old Mr. Cobleigh. The meeting house almost full. He was the oldest man in town. Mr. Goddard went back to Grafton. I went down to the port to go to the prayer meeting but Sarah wished I should stay with her as I did.” “March 3 rd , A very stormy day for town meeting but it is only a prelude to what it will be when we get female suffrage then it will storm both out doors and in doors. Went to meeting. James called a little while.” “March 9 th , Henry Whitney died this morning. It seems very sad. He was the middle aged man just beginning life as it were and a meek age. He was in usual health but it teaches us to be prepared for in such an hour we think not, we are called for.” “March 14 th , Aunt Ober is She went up to see Aunt Phoebe Bennett. Went over to Mrs. Ramey’s. Father had his things sold at auction. T was a great crowd Abner Powers was married last Thursday. Good luck to him. &c &c.” “March 27 th , Promised this day to inform Mattie Ball of my wabouts one year ago from today. March 27 th , 1869 Mary Ball and Mattie Ball visited me. Had a very nice time. Went over to the Post Office. Called in to see Mrs. Albert Alexander.” “April 9 th , Flew around like anything, packed and cleaned all the a.m. We all started for the Falls at two. Evening. We have come into this lonesome dirty place. I am home sick. The first thing Uncle Oscar was to help.” “April 10 th , Uncle Oscar and Aunt Mary were Fast day again and w am I. Little did I expect to be one year ago. How true it is that one knows not what a year knows and what hours may bring forth. Mrs. De Camp and Willis came down with loads of goods. Feel upset and lonesome and homesick.” “April 12 th , It is Sunday again and it has found me down in B. Falls. I am not going to church today. I feel very lonely. I do wish I could see a true friend which I trust. I have another week shall pass then I shall meet again if we live.” “May 11 th , Went to ride again this morning. Uncle Oscar went with James. Went and got my bonnet and ripped it all to pieces and am going to make a new frame out of the old one. Got me some flowers.” “June 1 st & 2 nd , Everyday brings it’s trials and troubles.
