LONGACRE’S PATTERN ‘INDIAN PRINCESS’ 1871 DOLLAR The obverse of this remarkable pattern features Longacre’s version of the ‘Liberty Seated’ design. Miss Liberty is seated facing left, with the date 1871 below. She is wearing a plumed Indian headdress similar to that found on the gold dollars of 1854 and 1856 (and other currency issues) and she is supporting a pole in her right hand. She rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY and behind her are two flags, one of which is ornamented with 15 stars. Around her are 13 stars. James Barton Longacre (1794-1869) was appointed Chief Engraver of the United States Mint on September 16, 1844, after the death of Christian Gobrecht.
