An extremely fine HEART Decorated Wrought Iron American Roasting Skewer or Spit, New England, Circa 1740-1760. Great condition, untouched, uncleaned, great old surface and patina. Rare form, a wonderful tightly tooled and 8 curl scrolled decorated HEART design with a triple twisted shaft with a wonderful shaped and twisted rat's tail hanger. A great curled center heart with eight (8) added curls. Great surface wear and wonderful hand forged tool marks throughout. Most of the HEART DECORATED iron tools and utensils were usually made for a young women's dowry. This fact is discussed in George Neumann's book, "Early American Antique Country Furnishings" as well as in "Wrought Iron in Winterthur". Often the bride would have these items made for either her dowry or receive them as wedding presents. They were primarily made for show purposes and display. The heart decorated skewers are extremely rare compared to the forks, shovels and spoons. There is a similar example, (not quite as elaborate) in, "Colonial Wrought Iron the Sorber Collection", page 43 shown in the last photo. 28 1/4" long. Typical wear and imperfections with age. Low starting Price and NO reserve. DUE TO THE NEW SHIPPING POLICY ON EBAY REGARDING INSURANCE I AM INCLUDING INSURANCE IN THE SHIPPING COST ON ALL ITEMS FOR OUR MUTUAL PROTECTION
