This is a gorgeous, 1909-D, $5.00 Indian Head Gold Half Eagle. The coin has very well struck surfaces and devices, including a very well struck 'D' mint mark. It has beautiful, copper-golden-orange coloring and comes with very few distractions. There is very nice remaining mint luster. This is a lovely looking old Indian coin. This technique gives the design elements and lettering a sunken-in appearance on a uniformly flat plain. Blackfoot Indian Chief Thundercloud of the Blackfoot nation served as the model for Bela Lyon Pratt's quarter & half eagle obverse. In 1872 he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a scout. Later, he started a touring theatrical company that merged with that of Buffalo Bill. According to the Franklin Mint, after Theodore Roosevelt became President of the United States (1901-1909), he was determined to change the appearance of American gold coins, which he believed did not compare favorably with those of the ancients.
