1911 SYRACUSE CHINA HOTEL~THE PORTAGE~ AKRON OHIO SERVICE PLATE NEAR MINTUp for auction is a rare plate from the Hotel Portage in Akron Ohio. It is made by O.P.Co. Syracuse China. Plate measures 10 1/4" across & depicts a Native American Indian brave carrying a birch-bark canoe on his back - a blue lake and a blazing sunset in the background. "THE PORTAGE" underneath "AKRON OHIO" in banner. The logo is crisp and clearPlate is backstamped O.P.Co. Syracuse China. It has a impressed #98 date code in a circle. This dates this piece to 1911. Most likely this plate was made for the opening of the hotel.Hotel Portage was a 250 room hotel built circa 1912-13 in Akron, Ohio. The hotel was demolished in 1991. The name "Portage" comes from the "Portage Lakes", which in turn were named after the old Indian portage path which connected the Cuyahoga River which flowed North to Lake Erie and the Tuscarawas River, which through the Muskingum, flowed south to the Ohio River. The eight mile "Portage" trail made Navigation from Lake Erie to the Ohio River much simpler for Native Americans & early settlers of the area. The old portage path was also part of an ancient boundary between the Six Nations & Western Indians .GREAT CONDITION!!! No chips or cracks. No Signs of use!!!
