From a Baltimore estate: This is a rare black mammy, holding a ball of string, string holder, wall mount with a metal ring. She measures almost 6.5" high and is made of what appears to be chalkware, but it is much denser and heavier; weighs just under 1 pound. She is painted with a blue dress, white apron, blue scarf, and white petticoats over black shoes. On the back is incised "C", in a circle, and 1947. The back is concave to house a ball of string, the end of which fits through the hole in her own figural ball of string. The stringholder collection from which this came has a very similar one to this made of cast iron which is offered on eBay currently. Other mammys in the collection are made of china which are relatively more common. This mammy has a wonderful face and nice detail. Excellent used condition; t is light wear on the painted higher areas and edges, but no chips or cracks. Buyer pays US mailing - priority plus optional insurance.
