No Reserve on this 1949 FRANKLIN HALF DOLLAR COLLECTOR COIN & FILLS A LOWER POPULATION 2ND-YEAR DATE This 1949 is 90% silver but the coin is more of a numismatic item than a bullion coin... this early date has become tough to find in ANY condition and it will only get more difficult as silver rises back up after sliding backward the past couple of years. Struck 66 years back (the 2nd Franklins year) and makes a filler in an album. It well circulated and probably cleaned - note the stains on both sides which are typically the result of a cleaning or polishing. I rate the coin FINE to VERY FINE DETAILS. Strong rims and a quick way to fill the date. Since it's likely a cleaned coin, know that it can't be graded. A cleaning alters the surface of ANY coin and precludes it from being given a grade by ANYONE. It does not have an impact on the silver content. These half dollars are, as I've stated in many prior listings, probably the most undervalued silver coin in the market. The series was short (1948-1963) and it end abruptly when JFK was shot; a new coin was introduced after his death and the government began removing silver from coins stuck for circulation purposes in 1964.
