This model is OUT OF PRODUCTION When Chevy introduced the 1953 Corvette, Ford was caught by surprise. It wasn't until late 1954 that it caught up with the soon to be American Icon, the 2-seat Thunderbird. Essentially, it was built from off-the-shelf components rather than being a completely new car. Refined for 1956, it added better ventilation and made more trunk room by moving the spare outside to the Continental rear bumper. This was a 1-year factory set-up and the spare was returned to the larger trunk in 1957. This model, painted dusk Rose with a black & white interior marks the fiftieth anniversary of the 1957 Thunderbird. It was the last two-seat Bird until the Retro-Bird made its debut as a 2002 model. The ’57 was larger and more refined the 2 previous models. It had a couple of new options as well, the Dial-O-Matic power memory-set seating and Volumatic Radio. The spare was back in the trunk where it belonged and Ford answered the earlier complaints by making the trunk larger, thus making the car longer as well. Of course it is full of Danbury Mint’s now signature features, including a working suspension, removable fender skirts, wind wings and movable sun visors and proper doors hinges.
