1972 Singapore $10 Proof Silver Coin " Sea Eagle " 3000 mintage KM - 9.1 1972, 1973 Composition: Silver: 90% Copper: 10%1974 Composition: Silver: 50% Copper: 40% Zinc: 5% Nickel: 5%Tidbits: The 1972 $10 BU coins were sold through all the banks and the (then) Currency Board in Empress Place.The 1972 proof coins received an overwhelming interest from collectors. More than 3,200 orders were sent in to the mint, when the mint were expecting about 1,000 orders. Half of the orders were placed by Singaporean, while the other half came from collectors in Malaysia, USA, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Europe. The 1972 silver proof coin is the first silver proof coin that The Singapore Mint minted. The proof coin were treated by specially produced dyes, and are highly polished with parts of it bussed. Striking was done individually instead of automation. The minting of the Singapore’s first silver ten-dollar coin was proposed sometime in 1969. But because of the soaring price of silver, the idea was temporarily shelved until the latter part of 1971. Finally, on 10 February 1972, the first silver ten-dollar coin was released. The design, by Mr Sim Tong Khern, an art lecturer at the then Teachers’ Training College, was chosen from one than 20 entries submitted.
