This attractive carved box up for auction is made from walrus ivory and whale baleen. It was crafted by an Alaska native, an Inupiat ivory carver named Al Kaloke of Nome, Alaska. Mr. Kaloke was born in Nome in 1951. He went to high school in Mt. Edgecumbe, Alaska, and after high school enrolled in the Navy from 1968 -1971. He has been carving since he was a very young boy. He has an appreciation for carving with natural materials of walrus ivory, whalebone and baleen and also fossilized bone. The box was purchased a year ago from the University of Alaska, Museum of the North, Museum Store, Fairbanks, Alaska. On the bottom of the box is carved Mr. Kaloke's name.Please note the sale of this marine animal product made from whale (baleen and ivory) is permitted for sale on eBay on the basis, the item has been transformed into an authentic Alaskan Native handicraft by an accomplished and well known craftsman. Mr. Kaloke's work has also been sold by the Alaska Native Arts Foundation as well as the Anchorage Museum, Anchorage Museum Shop.
