This is an original soup bowl from what most say was the first nightclub in the country. The only two I could find sold online went for over 200.00. This one starts at 25.00. The Crystal Cave nightclub and restaurant in the basement of the Grunewald Hotel in New Orleans La., complete with waterfalls, stalactites and chorus girls. Built in 1893 by German immigrant Louis Grunewald as a six-story 200 room hotel facing Baronne Street and enlarged in 1908 with a 14 floor 400 room addition facing University Place, the original site of Tulane University. In 1923 the hotel was purchased and renamed the Roosevelt after President Teddy Roosevelt and the club was closed. In 1965 the name changed again to the Fairmont. This plate is more than likely a true antique. The club closed in 1923 so one would assume no new plates were not ordered after 1920, if ever, however, this plate has an older mark than others being sold so it is probably an original putting it anywhere from 100 to 117 years old. It also says it was made in Austria and some newer less worn plates do not have Austria as the place of origin. You can actually see the same china on the tables in the picture postcard provided. No chips or cracks, just normal wear. 9" in diameter. In the center is a Pelican in a marsh with Cat Tails and Lily Pads and twin alligators at the bottom. read more
