This is Fudo-Myoo (Japanese name) His orginal name in Sanscrit is "Acala". He is a guardian diety and always carrys a sword in his right hand and a lariet in his left. He is known as "The Immovable One" and is particularly revered in Japan. Wikipedia gives a great history and explanation of everything about this guy. He is 8 1/2 inches high (21.5 cm), 3 3/4 inches wide (9.5 cm) and a little over 1 inch thick (3 cm). His flames are 12 inches high (30.5 cm) and 6 inches wide. some of his flames on his left side have broken off. It looks like someone put glue on his back at some time and maybe also a screw, nail or a wood peg through the flames and into his back. There is a hole in both. The ends of his feet have broken off and there was probably a wood stand at some time that he stood on. It seems he would have been attached to the flames. The flames have a slot at the bottom that would fit into the stand. We don't know how old he is. He looks old. We picked him up at an antique auction in Japan along with a few other Japanese antique Buddhist items. We have other antique/vintage Japanese items on our ebay site.
