For your consideration is an authentic early Edo period Suji Kabuto helmet from the era of the Samurai warrior. This helmet was purchased from a Japanese ebay seller and was partially restored using modern finishes. This particular type of helmet is made from a shaped and formed leather cap which is then overlaid with ridges, both decorative and supportive and finished with many coats of lacquer. The helmet is then adorned with various added features like a maetate, or a hachimanza. It is in good used condition with the exception of a slight split of the perimeter ridge near the right temple away from the formed leather headpiece as shown in the overhead photo. The metal fittings and rivets on the upper portion of the Kabuto are original. The shikoro neck guard strips are made out of full grain cowhide which I cut, shaped, and formed while wet. The dried strips were then stiffened and sealed with multiple coats of polyurethane, and finished with black paint. The topmost shikoro strip has the earlike extensions that protect the neck guard from being damaged or cut from a frontal sword blow to that area. The braided ito cord is made of cotton, and could easily be replaced with authentic silk ito braided cord, readily available here on ebay. The text above is believed to be essentially accurate.
